Colin had been a member of Wakefield Hockey Club for over 50 years joining in 1967 when annual subscriptions were only £5.00. He played the majority of his hockey as an enthusiastic, energetic inside forward in the 3rd and 4th teams and was a keen member of the master’s side, then known as the veteran’s team.
Whilst playing he always gave 110%. He was a dedicated member both on and off the field and became a General committee member in 1987 and a life member of the hockey section in 1998 to recognise his contribution to the club.

Colin captained the third team from 1972 to 1977 and again in the 1979/80 season and also captained the fourth team from 1983 to 1987. He became Mens section chairman for nine years from 1997 to 2006 and Chairman of the Hockey Clubs Management committee from 2000 to 2004 before becoming President in 2004, a post he held until 2011.

He was a keen supporter of the Men's performance squads and was present at most home games which was followed by his mandatory one pint of beer. For many years he under took the announcing duties at the clubs 6’s and 7’s tournaments held on the grass pitches and later at the Birthday Bash/Summer Splash festivals on the Astro’s. Some of his amusing
comments will be remembered for years, together with his donated raffle prizes, a gallon of washing up liquid.

Colin's (& Helens) home in Royston was the venue for several garden parties which were held as both socials and fund raisers for the Hockey Club. A true reflection of his commitment and dedication, as well as the support his wife, Helen gave him, with his passion for hockey at College Grove.

He was a director/’member of the Council’, (as it was once called) of the Sports Club for many years, taking on the role of Grounds committee chairman, initially in the days of the grass pitches and later after he had instigated and project managed the building of the first sand based artificial pitch at the club which opened in June 1993. Colin was awarded the England Hockey Association (as it was then) Achievement Award in 1993 for his outstanding contribution to this project at College Grove. He had numerous ‘battles’ with
stalwarts of the old rugby section, including car parking in non-allocated areas and was very hockey focused. No-one messed with Colin.

Due to Colin's commitment to the Sports club he became vice -chairman for a number of years and was honoured to take up the position of President in 2007 after over 25 years’ service on the board. He remained President of the Sports Club until 2012. He was always complimentary to the way the Sports Club and Hockey section had developed over the years, even the recent formation of the member’s bar/lounge.

A smile from an enthusiastic gentleman that will be truly missed.

Thank-you Colin, R.I.P.
