Wakefield Hockey’s Trophy Treble
Wakefield’s U16 Girls first eleven completed the ‘Yorkshire Treble’ last Sunday at College Grove, hosting the finals of the Yorkshire Premier League Playoffs. With the Yorkshire League Trophy, an outing at the National Indoor Hockey Finals and the England Hockey Yorkshire Cup already secured, Wakefield had high hopes but started poorly and lost an early goal to a motivated Doncaster side in the first 10 minutes of the first game. In the end, this proved to be the spark that ignited Wakefield’s hockey fire with the girls responding well to secure a vital 1-1 draw. This was followed by wins against Halifax (5-0) and Thirsk (2-0) to win the group stage.
In the semi-final against a strong York side the game flowed back and forth as both sides pressed to break the deadlock – Wakefield and England’s Taryn Allen making a series of important saves in goal. Time was running out until Wakefield spotted a gap in the York defence, accelerating through at pace to slot the ball to the left of a despairing keeper and progress to the Yorkshire Playoff Final against Doncaster (again).
Wakefield’s squad is deep, full of Yorkshire Performance Centre players, and with a number of girls playing high level senior performance hockey the extra fitness and match-play experience was clear to see in the final against Doncaster. Wakefield dominated possession, reducing the opposition to breaks from within their own half, expertly channelled by Wakefield’s defence and central midfield units. Doncaster’s resistance looked to be forcing the match to penalties as the home side pressed constantly to find the winner. However, in the last 90 seconds and to the joy of the home support, the pressure finally broke the deadlock. Wakefield slammed the ball home to record a precious 1-0 win and secure their third and final trophy of a brilliant 2017-2018 season.
Elsewhere, Wakefield’s other U16 teams also performed superbly, reaching all four finals across the day. The U16 Boys played in the Yorkshire Premier League Playoff Final, finishing runners up after losing 2-0 to a high quality Harrogate outfit. The U16 boys and girls 2nd XI’s were also winners – the boys winning their Division 2 Playoff Final and the girls finishing a very respectable runners up against Huddersfield’s first eleven in the same girls competition.
As Wakefield’s U16 leaving Captain Olivia Wilson put it “we’ve played some great hockey against some great teams, we made some great friends in lots of clubs and we’ve had a great time”. Overall an excellent end to the season!!
